Monte Cristo Sammich

Monte Cristo Sandwich

Crackerberries Kitchen

Sweet, savory, golden, and just a little bit indulgent!

There’s something wonderfully delicious about a Monte Cristo Sandwich. Ham, turkey, and melted Swiss cheese come together between slices of bread, with a little mayonnaise and Dijon mustard for extra flavor. The sandwich is dipped in an egg mixture, cooked until golden brown, dusted with powdered sugar, and served with raspberry preserves.

It’s a sweet-and-savory combination that might just make you wonder why these ingredients were ever kept apart!

Ingredients

Makes 2 sandwiches

  • 4 slices thick white bread, brioche, or Texas toast
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices deli ham
  • 4 slices deli turkey
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting
  • Raspberry preserves, for serving

Directions

  1. Prepare the sandwiches. Spread mayonnaise on one slice of bread and Dijon mustard on the other. Layer each sandwich with Swiss cheese, ham, turkey, and another slice of Swiss cheese. Place the prepared bread slices together and press gently to hold the sandwich in place.
  2. Prepare the egg mixture. In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, and salt until well combined.
  3. Heat the skillet. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat.
  4. Dip and cook. Dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, coating both sides. Place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook for approximately 4–6 minutes per side, or until golden brown and the cheese is melted. Adjust the heat as needed to prevent burning.
  5. Dust with powdered sugar. Transfer the sandwiches to a plate. Dust generously with powdered sugar, then cut each sandwich diagonally.
  6. Serve and enjoy. Serve warm with raspberry preserves for dipping.
